In the land of Ebelvie, a war has been raging for eighty long years. The Umaris, who fight with their advanced technology, battle against the Koys and their magic for control of the Mainland. Fifteen-year-old Sybil Marshall – who prefers to be called Sam – leads a pampered lifestyle in this time of conflict. Her hometown of Heartlin has always been a haven from the war’s bloodshed, but as its troops prepare to leave for yet another far-off battle, her father, a famous Umari major left to raise her alone after her mother died, seems to unravel as his departure nears. Everything starts to change when he presents her with a long-delayed gift from her mother and a woman named Polohani begins to haunt her dreams.
One night, Sam finds herself in danger and is saved by a strange boy, who claims to know her mother and reveals an even greater threat to her father's unit

I thoroughly enjoyed it & highly recommend it.. I have every book he ever published; every damn one of them is a trip to read, like you're sitting in a bar with this great storyteller and he cannot stop talking - and
